he Eastern Cape Province of South Africa is comprised of about 6.5 million people, and is the province that has produced most (perhaps over 60%) of the black leaders, including Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Steve Biko, Chris Hani, Thabo Mbeki, and Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The Premier of Eastern Cape Province, Hon. Rev. Stofile, led a powerful delegation to Connecticut in May 2002, which culminated with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the State of Connecticut and the Eastern Cape Province.
The agreement between Connecticut and the Eastern Cape Province calls for the two parties to share information, create close relationships with particular attention to educational programs and student exchanges, and promote strategic alliances and joint ventures in specific areas that include economic development, education, and tourism.
As part of the University of Connecticut’s privileged and growing partnerships with various South African institutions, the University of Connecticut is committed to facilitating the exploration of developing working relationships between business and political constituencies in the State of Connecticut and the Eastern Cape Province. The international, political, and financial relationships with the Eastern Cape Province will not only cultivate goodwill, but also help sustain the momentous transformation underway in South Africa.
